Resumo: It is hard to overemphasize the importance of biodiversity, not only for the functioning of natural communities, but also for the maintenance of the multiple ecosystem services on which life in this planet depends, including ours. But this wonderful diversity of species and its great benefits for humanity, impose equally great challenges when trying to manage and anticipate the consequences of climate change and direct human disturbances. Great advances have been made in recent years to study these complex ecological systems thanks to the availability of complete webs, and the incorporation of network theory. I present our empirical and theoretical, and modeling studies on marine ecological networks, and highlight the major breakthroughs still needed if this approach is to be useful in conservation and sustainable management.
