Resumo: Ocean warming is a worrisome effect of climate change that has already caused range shifts and local extirpations of marine fishes, yet we know little about the mechanisms through which changes in water temperature and circulation affect fish populations. In this talk I will describe 8 years of research efforts in the Galapagos Islands using both spatial and temporal sea surface temperature gradients to understand why some species do better than others in warmer water. Using long-term population monitoring, manipulative experiments, and compound-specific stable isotope methods, I will show that dietary requirements and the capacity for trophic plasticity are key predictors of which fish species are winners and which are losers as oceans warm.
