Resumo: Dispersal is one of the most prominent hypothesised predictors of range size, but the theoretical expectation of a positive dispersal-range size relationship has received mixed empirical support. By synthesising results from 86 studies on plants and animals in marine, terrestrial and freshwater realms, we show that the overall effect of dispersal on range size is positive, but its strength depends largely on the clade and trait used as dispersal proxy, as well as study location and approach. Our synthesis emphasizes the importance of a more integrative view of the dispersal process and its causal relationship with range size.
